ROOST at the Florence Park Community Centre on 28th March 2025

ROOST 28th March 2025 Florence Park Community Centre

'ROOST': A Musical Tale of Misfits, Myths, and Crumbling Railway Stations.

Prepare to be transported to a world where fantasy and reality intertwine. Karen Kay’s one-woman fantasy musical, 'ROOST', is coming to the Florence Park Community Centre on Friday, March 28th.

ROOST tells the original tale of Bòbò, a misfit living in an abandoned railway station.  It weaves together themes of genius, belonging, and the transformative power of curiosity.

Bòbò makes cloth out of rain and navigates a world where time and logic are unstable.   She ponders some of life’s big questions like: what’s the point of making fragile beautiful things;  how to do something useful with your life (according to grandpa) and where can you find the best baked goods?

ROOST is absurd, funny, philosophical, wondrous, and inspiring. Filled with funky songs and musical storytelling, the show blends the fantastical world of Bòbò, with reimagined Oxford locations.  These include Gloucester Green Market; the abandoned Cowley Morris railway station and the History of Science Museum (featuring one of its famous objects.)   The story also weaves in an extraordinary NASA space project.

Props; masks; a vintage Rhodes electric piano and much more, bring this world to life.

There's even an answer to the question: ‘as we go looking up with longing at stars do they look back down and long for us too?’

Karen is a musician, writer and performer who has played everything from blues, jazz, rock and improvisation to avant garde and more.    Just like her character, Bòbò, she’s discovered that following the threads of curiosity leads to all kinds of unexpected wonderful discoveries.
